***
Painted during a brief holiday with friends in the Netherlands, it depicts a young Dutch girl (reputedly the daughter of the proprietor of the hotel where Picasso stayed) nude, except for a traditional cap. The archaic serenity and gentle mood of the painting relate to Picasso's rose period but, significantly, the volumetric treatment and statuesque quality of the figure foreshadow the artist's cubist developments and prefigure his classical nudes of the 1920s.
